The Meaning of Bright Colors

Elyse Clark

Hey everyone!

Last week we talked about the meaning of neutral colors.

This week, we will focus on a few main bright colors. This list is obviously non-exhaustive as there are a lot more different colors than just this selection. However, these colors are the most common bright colors to wear and it is really important for you to know their meaning.

  • Blue: means peace, confidence and logic. It is often considered as an "official" color, like in police uniforms for example. In our everyday wardrobes, there are SO MANY shades of blue that we can use and all throughout the year - darker for the winter, lighter during the summer!

  • Pink: means romance, sensitivity and femininity. Pink is definitely THE womanly color. It is great to add some touches of pink in our wardrobes, even if it might not be our favorite color! The big plus with this color is that it can brighten up any outfit that will be too plain and looks good with every complexion!

  • Purple: means creativity, magic and spirituality. Is this why Madame Irma is portrayed with a purple scarf on her head in movies? Probably! Purple is such a great alternative to darker colors like navy or black for example. It usually has a great effect on other people so if you tend to never wear purple because you're afraid of it, give it a try sometime with an accessory like a bag or a scarf!

  • Red: means energy, passion and danger. If you need an extra boost or extra energy for the day, red will be your go-to color! Your only challenge will be to know how to choose the right undertone (blue or yellow); and make sure you choose your lipstick accordingly! It will have to be in the same shade but can be darker or lighter!

  • Green: means relaxation, money and environment. Brighten up your day with the right shade of green! I know we are not leprechauns, but green reflects luck and general happiness on other people! However, just like with red, make sure you choose the right undertone for your skin color!

We really hope these tips were helpful; as always, feel free to shoot us an email if you need in-person consulting on what colors would work best for you!

The Meaning of Neutral Colors

Elyse Clark

Hello!

One of the most important things to understand when dressing yourself is colors.

Each color has a different meaning that you might want to pay attention to if you want to reflect that (or not!) in your outfit!

Today, we will be talking about neutral colors, so here is a quick recap on what those colors mean.

  • Black: means sophistication, authority and mystery. Black is a great staple color to wear, and it is definitely a safe color. However, wearing all black, head to toe might mean that you are hiding behind it or that you lack imagination; so make sure you mix it up!

  • Gray: means security, stability and strength. Gray and black have many similarities in the meaning of their color. Therefore, you should never wear an all gray outfit; or if you do, make sure you wear different shades, like mixing charcoal and pewter in one outfit!

  • Brown: means structure, support and down-to-earth. If you are tired of wearing black and gray, brown is a great alternative and it comes with many, many different shades! It is especially trendy right now if you decide to wear a camel suede jacket for example ;-) Just make sure you never wear all brown and use the shades that suit your skin tone!

  • Beige: means dependable, conservative and relaxing. Wearing beige makes you appear more trustworthy to other people, so it is definitely the color to wear if you have a job where communicating with people face-to-face is a common occurrence! It is also a great color to rock during the summer!

  • White: means purity, hope and freshness. Obviously, you cannot have a complete wardrobe without white pieces in it, they are absolutely essential! White is one of my favorite colors to wear at the moment - even though it is not supposed to be a color per say - and they can come in multiple forms! Wearing textured fabric is great, like silk or denim, and it is the best color to wear during the summer!

We hope these descriptions were helpful; and as you know, if you need a deep color consultation, email us and we will be thrilled to work with you!

What to do When Shopping on Your Own

Elyse Clark

Hey everyone!

When you have no idea how to shop for yourself, going to stores and picking out clothes can be dreadful and you might not know where to go, what to pick and have buyer's regrets.

Your goal is to avoid that as much as possible and plan out your shopping trips so that you will never be disappointed when shopping again!

Obviously, if you have no interest in doing so on your own and need help, you know who to email :)

Since we haven't gone into much details for this series yet, we would advise you to only shop for the basics you are currently missing in your wardrobe for now.

Depending on the budget you have at the moment, you should keep these few things in mind while shopping for your new basics:

  • Make a list of what you need and stick to it
  • Wear something easy enough to take off and on while trying out clothes
  • Set your budget per item
  • Make sure what you are trying on really fits and looks good on you
  • Be careful with overpriced items

You are all set to go shopping on your own now; the first tip being the most important one: make a list the same way you would when going to the grocery store (yes, you read right!) and you will avoid any buyer's regrets!

See you next week!

How to Organize Your Current Wardrobe

Elyse Clark

Hello!

We are back this week to help you organize your current wardrobe.

Have you always been struggling with the mess that is your closet? Do you have so many clothes and have no idea how to make sense out of it all?

We are here to help! Remember: if you do not want to do this all on your own, shoot us an email and we will come to you to help you organize your wardrobe!

I know it might be tough, but you do have to know that, in order to move forward, you will have to get rid of some - or a lot - of things you currently own, depending on your needs.

You should get all your clothes out of your closet for now and make 3 different piles:

  1. Clothes that you absolutely WANT to keep
  2. Clothes that you NEED to keep
  3. What you can donate, sell, or throw away

The 1st and 3rd pile are usually easy to make since you know what you want to keep and get rid of. The 2nd pile however might be a little tougher, so here is a little guide to help you through it:

  • The clothes that you need to keep are your basics that are needed in every person's closet (LBD, white shirt, classic ballet flats, a good blazer, a good suit...)
  • While making a list of the basics you already own, keep in mind that they are not necessarily the same for everyone. Of course, you should keep a professional outfit in case of an interview/meeting or something; but if your job or life doesn't require you to look super professional all the time, there's no need in having more.
  • Once you know your basics, the leftover clothes will also have to go into the 3rd pile - sorry!
  • You can now put piles 1 & 2 back in your closet and take care of pile 3 however you'd like!

We hope today's tips were helpful and we will see you all next week for more!

How To Define Your Style

Elyse Clark

Hello everyone!

How have you been doing?

The Edge is officially back and running again and we couldn't be happier over here at Personal Shopper LA.

To celebrate, we thought we would throw in a series of articles completely focused on helping you style yourself. If you need any more help than what we will talk about in this series, feel free to check out our packages and shoot us an email to see how we can work together!!

Part I of this will be knowing how to find your own style. How would you define your style? Do you already have an idea? Is it all a huge blur to you? Do not worry, we are here to help!

The first thing to do is ask yourself a few questions before you can go on and shop for new pieces:

  • Do I need a big wardrobe change or do I just need to freshen it up?
  • Do I have 1 style I like or am I all "over the place"?
  • Is there anyone I admire style-wise, like a celebrity?
  •  What style(s) do I really want to focus on?

Once you've answered those questions, you will already have a better idea of what you want.

Still struggling with those questions? We've got you covered!
If you need clarification on the style category you would like to focus on, here are a few examples:

  • Classic & Elegant (Kate Middleton, Angelina Jolie, female politicians...)
  • Casual Chic (Emily Blunt, Julia Roberts, Kate Winslet...)
  • Romantic (Taylor Swift, Jennifer Love Hewitt, Jessica Alba..)
  • Bohemian (Nicole Richie, Vanessa Hudgens...)
  • Rebel & Artistic (Rihanna, Lady Gaga, Katy Perry...)
  • Trendsetter (Olivia Palermo, Diane Kruger, Victoria Beckham...)
  • Retro (Dita Von Teese, Zooey Deschanel...)
  • Rocker (Gwen Stefani, Kristen Stewart...)

We hope this was already helpful to you and stay tuned for next week's post!

Up and coming designer of the week : Calla Haynes

Elyse Clark

Today, on Up and coming designer of the week, we will be talking about the fabulous Calla Haynes who has been turning heads at every fashion week for a few years now. It's time to check her out!

Born in Toronto, Calla Haynes has made Paris her home for a while and has been on Fashion week's radar for a few seasons already. Her collections are full of feminine shapes and colorful prints. She knows oh-so-well how to balance an urban chic style with extreme prettiness.

This Parsons alumni is not ready to stop and her last collection is once again spot on and will make everyone crazy in love with her pieces. It was inspired by her gorgeous chow chow - yes, her dog - mixed with " a brokenhearted girl living in Paris, who moves to Nashville ".

Favorite store of the week - Mom's The Word

Elyse Clark

Because Moms are beautiful creatures on this planet of ours, we decided today to write about the store Mom's The Word, in our weekly column, favorite store of the week! Check it out!

Mom's The Word is a shop that was created 17 years ago in the Bay Area, after the owner, Sarah Pollak, just had her second child. Getting dressed in the morning was one of her favorite activities that she wanted to share with all the pregnant (or post-pregnant) women in the world who have no idea what to wear!

The store just opened their first boutique in Los Angeles, on July 1st, taking over TEN's old space on W 3rd street. Sarah Pollak stated "People from LA kept coming into our stores up north and telling us we needed to be [here], and we listen to our customers. [West 3rd] just felt right, like it was the time, and this was the place."
